The journey of The Seller Community Podcast from List Perfectly is more than just a series of episodes; it reflects passion, storytelling, and the love of community. In honor of National Podcast Day, let’s dive into the backstory of how the podcast came to life through the eyes of its creator, Doug Smith, and his ongoing partnership with List Perfectly co-founders Clara Albornoz and Amanda Morse.

Let’s rewind a bit to the beginning when Doug, now the Director of Content at List Perfectly, had a vision. Reflecting on his decades-long journey in content creation, Doug says, “I’ve been working in online content for more than 20 years. It all started with a music website, like an online blog before blogs. I used to interview bands and review music. It was pre-social media, pre-images on the internet, and I just learned everything as I went along. Then, podcasts started emerging, and when I was at eBay working with their seller community team, I helped launch their eBay for Business Podcast after eBay radio had been on for 15 years.”

It was clear Doug had a passion for connecting with people through storytelling, and podcasting was the perfect medium for that.Doug launched his music podcast, The Albums That Saved Us, not only to fuel his love for music but also to launch, produce, record, edit, and distribute a podcast on his own from scratch.

The birth of The Seller Community Podcast

When Doug left eBay, he knew he wanted to create something bigger that wasn’t tied to one marketplace but touched on all of them. And that’s where List Perfectly came in. Clara, Amanda, and Doug’s connection was lucky in many ways. One afternoon, Doug and Clara started brainstorming, and by the following day, the foundation for The Seller Community Podcast was already taking shape.

Clara vividly remembered: “We had talked late one afternoon, and the next morning, I was buzzing, waiting to chat again. That’s when we knew we had something special!”

Initially, it wasn’t easy. Doug was balancing a full-time job while building the podcast as a consultant. Clara reminisces about those early days, “I’ll never forget that Doug was working another job, yet you still managed to launch The Seller Community Podcast while providing for your family. That dedication is something Amanda and I will always appreciate.”

From the beginning, The Seller Community Podcast was designed to be a hub for the entire reselling community—one that reflected the heart and soul of List Perfectly. As Doug emphasizes, “I wanted something that wasn’t just for one marketplace. Some sellers don’t sell on eBay, and some sell more on Poshmark or Mercari. The goal was to create something representing all sellers, no matter where they were in their journey.”And that’s precisely what The Seller Community Podcast has become—a place where stories are told, knowledge is shared, and the entire seller community can feel connected.

Building a podcast with a purpose

Doug’s experience with eBay for Business Podcast undoubtedly shaped how he approached The Seller Community Podcast. “I learned so much from Griff (the host of eBay for Business Podcast),” Doug said. “He taught me the importance of being natural on the mic, asking the right questions, and most importantly, listening.”

These lessons became central to The Seller Community Podcast. It’s a place to share information, tell stories and celebrate the community. As Doug said, “Everyone has a story. And people love hearing those stories. They love sharing their journeys, from why they started reselling to how they’ve grown their businesses. That’s what makes the podcast so special.”

The evolution of The Seller Community Podcast

In its early days, The Seller Community Podcast was purely audio-based. But as the seller community grew, so did the podcast’s reach. Doug and the team adapted. The podcast launched eventually expanded to YouTube and its website at thesellercommunitypodcast.com.

As the podcast evolved, so did its guest lineup. From marketplace executives and industry experts to authentic resellers sharing their stories, each episode offers something unique.

“One of our top episodes was with Dave Snyder, an eBay SEO expert. He dropped so much valuable knowledge about search engine optimization for listings. It’s still one of our most listened-to episodes, and we refer back to it often,” Doug says.

Other standout episodes include those with sellers like Kim Rose and Stewart White, whose journeys from corporate jobs to full-time reselling continue to inspire listeners.

“Kim’s story gives me goosebumps. She left her corporate job of over 20 years to pursue reselling full-time,” Clara recalled. “It’s a leap many of us dream about but are scared to take. Her courage and passion are contagious.”

And then, there are the fun moments. Doug shared the story of interviewing Julien from eBay’s VERO program: “Julien had to tell his mom she couldn’t use certain pictures in her listings because they violated VERO!”

What’s next for the podcast?

As The Seller Community Podcast approaches its fourth anniversary, the team has no plans to slow down. “We’re going to keep telling stories, bringing on marketplaces, and maybe add some new segments like tech tips from Patrick or mastermind sessions from Listing Party. The podcast is all about the community, so we’ll continue evolving based on what they need,” Doug says.

The power of podcasting

Doug’s advice is simple for anyone considering starting a podcast: “Don’t be intimidated. You don’t need a fancy studio or equipment to start. Pick a niche you love, be consistent, and let your passion shine through. It’s about storytelling, and everyone has a story worth sharing.”

And so, The Seller Community Podcast continues its journey, one story at a time. Here’s to many more episodes filled with laughter, learning, and community.

Be sure to tune in to the next episode, and who knows? Maybe you’ll hear your own story being shared next!
