Etsy’s New Listing Image Requirements: What AI Photo Edits Are Allowed?

If you remove backgrounds from vintage clothing or brighten listing photos on Etsy, here’s the important news: Etsy still allows AI photo editing on additional images. But on October 22, 2026, Etsy updated its listing image requirements: most products now need at least one completely unedited photograph of the actual item.

The distinction is important for sellers who already use background removal. You don’t need to abandon edited images; you need to know which photo must remain untouched.

Etsy’s Seller Policy is part of its Terms of Use, while its Listing Image Requirements set the specific photo rules. The Help Center explains how to apply them; the Seller Handbook announcement includes both policy requirements and recommendations. The Handbook is guidance, but the requirements it repeats are still mandatory.

Etsy’s Unedited Photo Requirement for Most Products

For most items, at least one Etsy listing photo must show the actual product against a real background, without any editing. No AI background removal, retouching, filter, crop, or color adjustment should be applied to the photo used to meet this requirement.

This does not mean every image in the listing must be untouched. Etsy allows up to 20 photos per listing; additional photos may be edited as long as the edits don’t misrepresent what buyers will receive.

Tip

Imagine a vintage leather bag photographed on your worktable. Keep one original, unchanged photo showing that bag and its real surroundings. You can use another image of the same bag with a clean, digitally replaced background.

Does the unedited photo have to be first? Etsy does not expressly require that. Its Help Center guidance recommends making the first photo the clearest, most realistic representation of the item, which is different from requiring the original photo in the first position.

Allowed and Prohibited Photo Edits, Including AI Background Removal

Etsy’s official policy separates Allowed Edits from Prohibited Edits. For the photos beyond the required unedited image, the dividing line is whether the product still looks like the item the buyer will receive.

Table of Etsy's allowed photo edits, such as adjusting lighting, cropping and replacing the background, next to prohibited edits like changing color or hiding defects.

For example, removing a cluttered background from a vintage lamp photo is allowed on an additional image. Editing out a crack in the lamp’s base is not. The same goes for making a faded shirt look unfaded or making a worn handbag look new.

Tip

If you use List Perfectly’s PhotoRoom background removal, keep the original, unedited product photograph available for Etsy alongside any background-removed versions. The background edit itself isn’t prohibited; an inaccurate image (or the absence of the required original photo) is the problem.

Required versus recommended: Etsy’s Seller Handbook recommends noting AI photo edits in your description. That recommendation is different from Etsy’s requirement to disclose when the item being sold was created using AI, as explained in its Seller Policy.

Etsy’s Photo Requirements by Product Type

Etsy’s rules are not identical for every item. Its policy has a separate Rules by Product Type section.

Product typeWhat Etsy says about photos
Most physical products, including vintage itemsInclude at least one original, unedited photo of the actual item on a real background; accurate edits may appear in other images.
Print-on-demandA seller’s original design printed on a standard item may be shown with an authorized stock-photo mockup.
Digital downloadsFor visual products, show a preview or excerpt of what buyers receive. Nonvisual items, such as audio files, may use representative imagery, including AI-generated imagery, if not misleading.
Customized or made-to-order itemsUse photographs of real, finished examples you’ve previously made to demonstrate the quality of your work.
Craft patterns, recipes, seeds, and similar itemsInclude at least one real, unedited photograph of an actual finished result, not just an AI-generated simulation.

A separate Etsy rule prohibits the sale of AI-generated functional instructions, including AI-generated patterns and recipes. The photo exception does not make such products permissible. See Etsy’s AI creations guidance.

Etsy also requires sellers to have the necessary rights to listing images under its Intellectual Property Policy. The product-type exceptions do not authorize using someone else’s photos without permission.

Updating Photos in Existing Etsy Listings

Yes, the new requirements apply to existing listings. Etsy says sellers need to update any listing photos that don’t meet its revised policy. That does not mean every listing needs to be deleted and created again.

Start with listings where every product photo has a removed or replaced background, including photos you may have crosslisted from another marketplace. For most physical products, check that an untouched photo of the actual item is included. Then review edited photos for inaccurate colors, concealed wear, missing damage, or product features that were changed digitally.

A practical photo review:

  • Keep or add: One original, completely unedited image for product types that require it.
  • Check: Edited photos against the actual product, especially its color, material, condition, and flaws.
  • Replace: Images that materially misrepresent the item; follow the applicable product-type rules.

Will Etsy automatically remove a listing if it detects an AI image? Not simply because an image has been flagged for guidance. Etsy says its initial buyer reports about potentially misleading AI imagery will not, on their own, trigger immediate enforcement. That is not permission to ignore the policy: misleading images can still lead to listing removal, and a buyer case involving a materially different item may result in a refund charged to the seller.

Frequently Asked Questions About Etsy Listing Image Requirements

Can I use an AI-generated room background behind my vintage item?

Yes, on an additional image if the actual item remains accurately represented. Don’t make the item appear larger, newer, or different, and keep the required untouched product photo.

What if I only saved background-removed photos?

For products subject to the unedited-photo requirement, edited images do not qualify. If you still have the item, photograph it again against a real background without editing the new image.

Can I use a manufacturer’s or another shop’s photos for a vintage item?

Generally, no. Etsy’s Seller Policy calls for sellers’ own photos, with limited exceptions, such as authorized print-on-demand mockups. For vintage and secondhand items, photograph the actual product you’re selling.

For sellers who rely on AI background removal, the practical answer is straightforward: keep the real, untouched product photo and use accurate edited images to show the item clearly. Check Etsy’s Listing Image Requirements when reviewing existing photos or adding new ones.
